Region

Côte d’Or stretches from Dijon in the north to Santenay in the south, via Beaune. The wines produced here are more complex, more expensive and more lasting than elsewhere in Burgundy. They come from famous villages such as Vosne Romanee, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault and Puligny Montrachet. The region is divided into two parts, Côte de Nuits to the north and Cote de Beaune to the south. The first produces almost exclusively red wines, the second both red and whites. Cote d’Or takes its name from the Orient; the vines face east to make the most of limited sunlight.

Producer

The Chavy family has been a fixture in Puligny-Montrachet for more than two centuries. The son of Gérard Chavy, Alain established his own domaine in 2003, when his family’s vineyards were split between him and his brother, Jean-Louis. Domaine Alain Chavy comprises about 10ha of vineyards in and around Puligny. At six metres deep Alain’s underground cellar is the deepest in the village, ensuring a cool environment in which his wines can ferment and mature very gradually. Alain practises low-intervention winemaking, with minimal bâttonage and sparing use of new oak allowing Puligny’s prized terroir to shine through in his famously elegant, mineral-driven Chardonnays. He has now been joined by his son Corentin who helps with the winemaking.
