Region

The Southern Rhone is home to many famous appellations with a great variety of soils and microclimates, though in general sees ideal growing conditions that are warm and dry, with the Mistral wind proving a defining feature. Grenache forms the backbone of southern Rhône blends, including Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. With a range of varieties grown, the region sees a range of styles produced from quality red and white wines to the aromatic dessert wine Muscat de Beaumes de Venise.

Producer

A co-operative founded in 1929 with only 7 wine growers, Cave de Carainne has now grown to include group of 65 wine growers across the Rhône. Since its inception the co-operative has helped grow the name for the village of Cairanne and was key in creating Carainne AOC in mid-2018. The fruit from each winemaker across some of the top appellations in the southern Rhône is entrusted to head winemaker Denis Crespo who brought Cave de Cairanne back to the limelight in 2015. Supremely talented and with a passion for minimalist winemaking, he has enabled the now organically certified winery to produce a multitude of award-winning, top-quality wines.
Tasting Notes
A superb offering from Cave de Cairanne, this Vacqueryas has the perfect mix of vibrant fruit character and rich complexity. Organically farmed and hand harvested, the wine sees an extended fermentation time to extract as much character from the fruit as possible. Lees aging and spending 2-3 years in concrete vats brings a roundness and volume of the wine while retaining its great aromatic expression and beautiful freshness. Elegant on the nose with notes of blackberry, blackcurrants and plums, the palate follows through with delicate tannins and subtle perfumed notes of violets.
Food
Pairs well with vegetable casserole, quail dishes or marinated beef salad with Provence herbs.
