Region

The Southern Rhone is home to many famous appellations with a great variety of soils and microclimates, though in general sees ideal growing conditions that are warm and dry, with the Mistral wind proving a defining feature. Grenache forms the backbone of southern Rhône blends, including Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. With a range of varieties grown, the region sees a range of styles produced from quality red and white wines to the aromatic dessert wine Muscat de Beaumes de Venise.

Producer

La Villa des Nymphes was taken over by Eric Petitjean in 2019, a previous grower in Champagne. The estate is based in Rasteau, on the edge of the Massif des Baronnies, faces Mont Ventoux. Named after the discovery of an ancient alter dedicated to the Nymphs, a relic of the Roman era that was found in 1850 on the current site. The estate has execptional terroirs of complex soil types make up the vineyards split over key villages, which are all certified organic. In the winery Christophe Didier prefers the use concrete eggs over oak, with a minimal intervention approach and the wines show great elegance and finesse.
Tasting Notes
Beaumes de Venise AOP is the most recently created Rhone appellation for production of red wines (2005) and is picking up a fantastic reputation for excellent wines. Here the higher altitude vineyards are at 350m, on the slopes of the `laces of Montmirail` a jagged Jurassic mountain range. The vineyards soils are much rockier with marls and limestones. Grapes are selected carefully by hand and vinified seperately. Natural fermentation in concrete amphorae `eggs` followed by 3 weeks maceration. 2 years of ageing in the eggs leaves the wine soft and elegant. Dark chocolate, blackberry and earthiness fill the nose followed with rich flavours of black fruits, pepper and olive tapenade. The finish is long with silky tannins.
