Region

A second wine is the term for a premium wine made by an estate that is second only to their Grand Vin. These wines are produced from the same vineyards as the grand vin but at a more accessible price and can be a great introduction to their `older sibling`. In the vineyard and winery, these wines generally receive the same treatment as the grand vin however, the overall blend and maturation are different.

Producer

Chateau Gruaud-Larose can lay claim to a remarkably rich heritage despite its troubled and often impassioned past. The estate was divided in two in the 19th century, but was reunited in 1935 by the Cordier family. Today this famous Chateau is owned by the Merlaut family, who continue to produce wine of exceptional quality. The vineyards are located in a single block on a deep rise of Garonne gravel in the St Julien appellation, and the wine expresses this `terroir`.
Tasting Notes
The second wine from the second growth property, Gruaud Larose. The superb second wine shares many characteristics with the Grand Vin, but is approachable younger. Black cherry flavours with hints of mint and tobacco with a vibrant mouthfeel and pure red fruit notes with bright acidity in the herb-tinged finish
Food
Serve with roast beef and all the trimmings.
